01/Answered by Aetna Credentialing Customer Service
Checking Your Aetna Credentialing Status
Call 1-800-353-1232 (TTY 711) for medical and behavioral health credentialing status. Providers based in Missouri request an update through Aetna's online form instead. When credentialing is done, Aetna sends a written notice and your network contact helps you finish the contract.

Before you call
- 1.Open your CAQH profile and confirm Aetna is listed as an authorized plan.
- 2.Check that your attestation is current and nothing is marked missing.
- 3.Have the name, NPI and tax ID you used on the request to join.
Watch forIf Aetna finds an error in your credentialing data, it tells you. You correct it with whoever reported it, such as your licensing board, not with Aetna.
02/Billed under the licensed supervisor
Billing Aetna for Pre-Licensed Associates
Aetna allows supervisory billing for behavioral health care from qualified license-eligible clinicians. The claim lists the licensed supervisor as the rendering clinician, and routine psychotherapy needs no prior authorization. Everyone involved must be in network.
- Supervisor
- Licensed
- credentialed and contracted with Aetna
- Same employer
- Required
- same group or facility
- Same location
- Not required
- Virtual supervision
- Allowed
Who counts as license-eligible
- Has finished all the education for the license they are working toward
- Is completing the clinical hours their state requires for independent licensure
- Gets clinical supervision often enough for the size of their caseload
Watch forAetna states these rules in its Fall 2026 provider education bulletin, not in a formal payment policy. Ask your network contact before you build a group around them.
03/Credentialed by Aetna, the same way as in-person providers
Aetna Rules for Telehealth and Virtual-Only Therapists
Telehealth providers meet all of Aetna's usual criteria plus a telehealth set. You need a license in every state where your Aetna clients are located, and in the state where you are. A virtual-only practice needs no office, but must be able to refer clients to an in-person Aetna provider nearby.
- License
- Client's state
- and the state you are in
- Office
- Not required
- for virtual-only providers
- In-person referral
- 30 minutes
- from the client, longer if rural
- Self-insured plans
- May opt out
- of behavioral health telehealth
What each session needs
- The client present and taking part for the whole session
- A secure connection and the client's informed consent
- A private, professional setting, and records Aetna can audit
Watch forAetna decides which telehealth methods your agreement covers, and some states ban audio-only care. Check before you offer phone sessions.
